What to Wear for Your Family Photography Session

Choosing what to wear for family photographs can feel overwhelming—but it doesn’t have to be. The goal isn’t to make everyone match perfectly. It’s to choose clothing that feels comfortable, coordinates beautifully, and keeps the focus on the people you love.

Whether we’re photographing your family along Navarre Beach, in a beautiful garden, near Destin or 30A, or with my vintage Volkswagen bus, these simple suggestions will help you create a timeless, connected look.

Begin With One Outfit

Instead of trying to choose everyone’s clothing at once, begin with one outfit you truly love. This is often Mom’s dress, but it can be any special piece that helps establish the colors and overall feeling of your family’s wardrobe.

Once you have that first outfit, choose complementary colors and textures for everyone else. This makes the process much easier and creates a naturally coordinated look.

Coordinate Instead of Matching

The days of everyone wearing identical white shirts and khaki pants are behind us. Coordinated outfits create more depth, personality, and visual interest than perfectly matching clothing.

Choose two or three complementary colors and repeat them gently throughout the family’s outfits. For example, a palette of cream, soft blue, beige, and warm brown can look beautiful without appearing overly planned.

Choose Soft, Timeless Colors

Soft neutral and muted colors photograph beautifully and keep the attention on your family’s expressions and connection.

Some of my favorite colors include:

• Cream, ivory, oatmeal, and beige
• Soft blue, dusty rose, and muted lavender
• Sage, olive, and other gentle greens
• Warm caramel, rust, and soft brown
• Subtle floral patterns

Try to avoid neon colors, large logos, distracting graphics, and extremely busy patterns. These can compete with your faces and may make your photographs feel dated more quickly.

Add Texture, Layers, and Movement

Texture adds warmth and dimension to your photographs. Linen, lace, gauze, knits, embroidery, and flowing fabrics all photograph beautifully.

Layers can also help create a polished look. A cardigan, textured sweater, light jacket, or carefully chosen accessory can add variety without becoming distracting.

Flowing dresses and skirts are especially beautiful because they create natural movement. A soft breeze can bring a wonderful sense of life and romance to your photographs.

Dressing for a Beach Photography Session

For family photographs on Navarre Beach, Destin, or elsewhere along Florida’s Emerald Coast, light and natural colors complement the sand, water, and sky.

Cream, soft blue, sage, blush, beige, and warm neutral tones are wonderful choices. Lightweight fabrics also help everyone stay comfortable in Florida’s coastal weather.

Bare feet usually look most natural on the beach. If you would like to wear shoes, simple neutral sandals work best.

Dressing for a Garden Session

Garden portraits pair beautifully with soft, romantic colors and delicate details. Cream, dusty rose, muted blue, sage, lavender, and understated floral patterns work especially well among greenery and flowers.

A flowing dress, subtle floral print, or softly textured fabric can complement the setting while allowing your family to remain the focus of each photograph.

Dressing for Senior Portraits

Your senior’s clothing should reflect who they are while still feeling timeless. I recommend bringing a little variety—perhaps one dressier outfit, one relaxed outfit, and something that represents a favorite activity, interest, or personal style.

Solid colors and subtle patterns usually photograph best. Layers and accessories can provide several different looks without requiring a complete wardrobe change.

Most importantly, your senior should feel confident and comfortable. That confidence will always show in the photographs.

Dressing for a Vintage VW Portrait Session

The vintage VW bus creates a charming, nostalgic background, so timeless clothing works especially well.

Cream, beige, sage, denim, muted blue, soft florals, and warm earthy colors complement the bus without competing with it. Coordinated family clothing creates a polished result while still allowing each person’s personality to come through.

For seasonal VW sessions, we can adjust the colors to complement the setting. Spring sessions may include soft pastels and floral details, while Christmas sessions look beautiful with rich green, cream, warm neutrals, and small touches of festive color.
